Documented: Basic App Kit and User Management 2

It has taken quite some time but finally we are proud to present the documentation of our Basic App Kit, a foundation design for rapidly building custom data-driven apps on OpenWGA.

Along with it we also have published documentation of our brand new OpenWGA User Management 2 design, which should have popped up as new plugin to install in the plugin store recently. It is our default implementation for apps to be used as authentication backends, allowing to define users, their logins and their groups.

Not quite coincidentally it is also based on the Basic App Kit and can be seen as some kind of "real world demo" for the capabilities of the kit.

Find both documentations in our new doc library "book" Apps and development tools.

Finally: OpenWGA 6.1 released and available for download

So without further ado we present you the newest member of the OpenWGA release family: OpenWGA Server 6.1, as explained before, is more of an "evolutional" release which improves above 6.0 at some important key points, without bringing those big changes. However we are sure that this package has still something to offer for every OpenWGA user.

Unfortunately we fall back into old habits regarding the OpenWGA 6.1 documentation, which is not yet released, but will be in the very near future. Meanwhile you may want to have a look at what our issue tracker has to say about this new version or read about it in a previous posting.

OpenWGA 6.1 introduces the OpenWGA 6 feature stream. As a 6.0 user you can now choose if you want to stick with the base release and get regular and small maintenance updates from the 6.0 base stream or if you want to switch to the 6.0 feature stream, which will bring new features faster but may mean more maintenance effort. See our release strategy for details.

If you want to update and use our debian package repository then you will find OpenWGA 6.1 under a new package name to install: openwga6-ce-feature (or openwga6-ee-feature for enterprise customers). This will replace your old OpenWGA version with 6.1 but keep everything else intact.

All others will find OpenWGA 6.1 distributions as usual in the downloads section.

OpenWGA Developer Studio 2.1 accompanies this server release and is released along with it, bringing support for developing 6.1-compliant designs. If you already have WDS 2.0 then you can upgrade to this version via menu "Help > Check for Updates". Also you can just wipe your installation and replace it with a new one from our Downloads. Just make sure that your Workspace directory is not contained in your installation (which we do not recommend anyway).

One more thing to announce: The end of April 2013 will also see the end of the 3-year-support-lifespan of OpenWGA 5.0 base release. If you still use this release and haven't upgraded yet then you should do so in the next time, either stepping up to 6.0 or directly to 6.1. There will be no more maintenance for this version beginning with May 2013.

About OpenWGA 6.1

The last year have been quite a ride for us here at Innovation Gate, being almost constantly up to our necks in various customer projects. In those projects we used OpenWGA 6.0 for some very interesting custom website architectures, that demanded every bit of flexibility that our product has to offer (which, fortunately, is a lot). These are exactly the challenges for which we built OpenWGA and it's a great experience to see your own "brainchild" living up to it's promise!

But: The downside of this, as we have already talked about in an earlier posting, was the lack of feature development in the last months, so that we needed to postpone work on version 6.1 multiple times.

Well, you might have guessed it by now: We've done it once again :-) But the good news is, there now is a definite schedule for OpenWGA 6.1 release which will be on April the 2nd (Yes, we edited that, sorry again. And we still think that releasing on the day before would be a bad idea...).

Read on to see what goodies to expect from OpenWGA 6.1.

This may not be the most important plugin available for OpenWGA. However it is a good example for what is possible to do with OpenWGA and it is a useful tool for many of our customers especially in intranet projects.

The new version offers a new layout "image wall" for presenting your images. In this layout all images are dynamically scaled to a size that fits into rows, no matter if the image orientation is landscape, portrait or square.

The image-wall can also be used as content module to embed the view into any OpenWGA website:

The plugin can be installed from the OpenWGA plugin store.
